The man who chased the armed gunman in Christchurch

Abdul Aziz 48 is being hailed as a hero for preventing more deaths during Friday prayers at the Linwood mosque in Christchurch in New Zealand

Australian Brenton Tarrant, 28, a suspected white supremacist, was charged with murder on Saturday.

He yelled at the congregation of more than 80 people to get down but Aziz did not hesitate to go out and confront the gunman, said Alabi.

THE Imam of one of the Christchurch, New Zealand mosques attacked by a terrorist on Friday is a Nigerian, The Nation can report today.

"We have to be absolutely clear on cause of death and confirm their identity before that can happen".

Alabi said the community leaders had requested the process be done as quickly as possible.

He said the gunman ran back to the auto for a second time to grab another weapon.

Latef Alabi, the Linwood mosque's acting imam, said he believed the death toll would have been far higher if it had not been for Aziz's actions. Captain Mahmud Ullah spoke to media and thanked New Zealand authorities for arranging their safety and quick return. He added that the suspect ran back to his vehicle to supposedly get another gun and Aziz used the opportunity to throw the credit card machine at him.

Initially thinking someone was setting off firecrackers, Aziz became suspicious and ran out of the mosque, grabbing a small credit card processing device.

"Those two police officers acted with absolute courage", Bush said.

Church services for victims of the attack were held around the country, including at Christchurch's "Cardboard Cathedral", a temporary structure built after much of the central city was destroyed in a 2011 quake. He was rushed to hospital following the attack, but died late Friday night.

Carl Pomare was driving past the Masjid al Noor with an employee when he saw people running from the mosque and falling to the ground. One woman carried sandwiches and falafel.

"Then this brother [Aziz] came over".

"He went after him, and he managed to overpower him, and that's how we were saved", he said.

"You don't have much time to think, whatever you think of, you just do it, you know", Aziz told AFP, brushing off the "hero" tag as local Muslims gathered to thank him for saving relatives and friends.

The majority of victims were migrants or refugees from countries such as Pakistan, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Turkey, Somalia and Afghanistan. "This is a killer", he said.

"I stopped my prayer, I peeked through the window, and I saw the person with a machine gun, heavily dressed. He is not a man; he is a coward", Aziz said.

Tarrant did not have a criminal history and was not on any watchlists in New Zealand or Australia. He said he continued chasing the shooter, who did a U-turn and raced off. "I will pray for them".

Our prayers and condolences are with the country, stay strong New Zealand!

There are an estimated 1.5 million firearms in New Zealand, which has a population of only 5 million, but it has had low levels of gun violence.
