Suspect in New Zealand mosque killings makes first court appearance

A man spoke on a cellphone Friday outside the Christchurch New Zealand mosque that was the scene of a mass shooting

At least 49 people were killed in separate attacks on two mosques in Christchurch on Friday, horrifying New Zealanders. Police have asked all mosques nationally to shut their doors and advised people to refrain from visiting them until further notice.

New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern called the shooting a "terrorist attack" and one of the country's darkest days. But mass shootings still do happen. That was almost 30 years ago and was the deadliest shooting in New Zealand's history, until Friday.

A man got in a verbal dispute with his neighbor before going on a shooting spree with a semi-automatic rifle, killing 13 people.

The incident led to new rules restricting the use of Rambo-style weapons. Police Commissioner Paula Bennett at the time accepted recommendations that it be illegal for gang members to carry guns, but reportedly stopped short of implementing a number of other rules involving gun storage and ammunition.

He says he is racist but not a xenophobe and declares his support for Donald Trump "as a symbol of renewed white identity and common purpose". "Most guns can be legally sold on the Internet or through newspaper ads".

The Calgary Interfaith Council also issued a statement Friday condemning the New Zealand attacks.

Toronto Liberal MP Judy Sgro pulled out of the event after she found out about Cox's participation.

"In 2016, there were nine gun murders or manslaughters in New Zealand, a rate of 1.87 per million people".

"By comparison, Australia had almost 10 deaths per million in 2016, Canada had 5.4 deaths per million, and the United States had 106 deaths per million". For example, based on government figures compiled by GunPolicy.org, there were 59 homicides in 2015 "by any means", and 8 of those were gun homicides.

Those new amendments included greater oversight over the acquisition of ammunition, restricting sales to only firearms license holders and requiring permits for people to order guns or ammunition by mail, updating and adding more information including photographs to individuals'gun licenses, and requiring secure storage for guns.

Asked by a reporter on Friday if he sees an increase globally in the threat of white nationalism, the USA president responded: "I don't really".

Some members of the migrant communities targeted say that it was New Zealand's reputation for safety that drew them to the country.

There are people who I would describe as having extremist views that have absolutely no place in New Zealand and in fact have no place in the world. Born in Australia in a working class, low income family. "My parents. chose this country because they knew I would have a good education and they knew I'd be safe walking down the street with a headscarf". Now, her uncle was shot and is hospitalized.

Beyond that, the New Zealand Police noted in a separate release that in 20 years, from December 1998 to December 2018, there were a total of 15 murders committed by someone, who had a firearms license.

Calgary police said the service works closely with other law enforcement agencies to share information and that at this point, "there are no known threats to mosques in Calgary as a result of the attacks in Christchurch, NZ".
