Police have a 24-year-old suspect in custody in the slaying of reputed Mafia boss Francesco "Franky Boy" Cali in New York City, authorities said on Saturday.

"He has a conversation with an individual in front of that residence and that individual at some point in time, it's only about a minute into it, pulls out a firearm and shots are fired", said NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea. The New York Post reported the killing was related to a personal dispute - not activity related to organized crime - and the unnamed suspect had family in Brick. "We are at the beginning stages of this investigation", Shea said. "Was the person paid to do it?"

Police said surveillance video captures the shooter, and the pick-up believed to be the getaway truck.

The Gambino family was once among the most powerful criminal organizations in the USA, but federal prosecutions in the 1980s and 1990s sent its top leaders to prison and diminished its reach.

But sources said Cali - who helmed a family notorious for gambling, loan sharking, and its deadly trade in heroin and oxycodone - thought Comello was trouble, sources said. He was sentenced to 16 months in federal prison and was released in 2009.

Police say they are still investigating whether Cali's murder was a mob hit or whether he was killed for some other motive.

It was the first assassination of a New York City mob boss since an upstart John Gotti had Gambino boss Paul Castellano whacked outside Sparks Steak House in 1985.
