New Zealand PM vows to toughen gun control laws after Christchurch attack

What New Zealand the U.S. Norway and Canada Have in Common After the Christchurch Attack

The Muslim worshippers had congregated for Friday prayers, Islam's holy day of the week.

It is New Zealand's deadliest terror attack: 49 people have died in mass shootings at two mosques in Christchurch. He is "sickened" that the shooter said to "subscribe to PewDiePie" in a video before the shooting.

Police Commissioner Mike Bush told reporters he was mobilizing "every national police resource to keep people safe" as he advised residents of Christchurch to stay off the streets. That was almost 30 years ago and was the deadliest shooting in New Zealand's history, until Friday.

New Zealand police have arrested three people in connection with the attacks including one man who has been charged with murder.

Brenton Tarrant, a 28-year-old Australian man, identified himself online as being behind the attack. His Twitter and Facebook accounts have been taken down, but he published a lengthy manifesto shortly before the shooting, which sheds light on his beliefs and motives.

Ranstorp said Tarrant's document is shorter and "more sloppy" than the one written by the Breivik, who killed 77 people in 2011. Seven were killed at the Linwood mosque nearby, and one victim passed away at the hospital.

He said his actions were also inspired by a 2017 trip to France, where he was disappointed with the state of the cities; he described what he saw as an "invasion of France by non-whites".

I have been in contact this morning with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to express the UK's deepest condolences at the horrifying terrorist attack that took place at two mosques in Christchurch.

Owners of firearms in New Zealand are required to have a license but they are not required to register their firearms, unlike in Australia. "Clearly, what has happened here is an extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence".
