May counts on European Union for Brexit delay, World News & Top Stories

UK unprepared for Brexit

Lawmakers voted against the deal for a second time on Tuesday but then voted against leaving the European Union without a deal on Wednesday.

Next week, the EU's leaders will meet at a summit to discuss the extension of Britain's membership after 29 March, as well as the terms and length of the delay.

Ministers are making a renewed effort to persuade Tory Eurosceptics and the DUP to support Mrs May in a fresh "meaningful vote" provisionally expected to be held on Tuesday. "Those are the indications which the Brussels institutions of the European Union - the commission, the council secretariat and certain member state governments - have been giving to us".

The European Council President is one of the EU's longest-standing backers of a second Brexit referendum and still hangs onto hope of being able to influence another vote.

Lidington said the delay could end up being more than a year, if no deal is agreed in the next few days.

According to the leaked document, the United Kingdom will have to take part in May votes if it wants an extension of more than three months.

Christchurch shooting: Sajid Javid slams Australian Senator Fraser Anning over comments
Many Twitter users immediately condemned Anning's remarks, with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison slamming them as "disgusting".

The UK Government would have to take further steps to stop that happening.

One cabinet minister has now told The Sun that they believed the chairman of the 1922 committee, Sir Graham Brady, would have to "tap her on the shoulder" and suggest that she leave her post. They also backed a much longer extension to Brexit if MPs fail to back the prime minister's plan.

Later on, Wednesday (March 13th), the UK MPs voted down a no-deal Brexit option in any circumstances, proffering a breathing space for UK businesses which had been shifting their assets outside the UK in the fear of a no-deal Brexit, which would eventually prevent UK companies to conduct business with other eurozone nations.

Next week, MPs will be asked to vote again on Theresa May's deal, which they've already rejected overwhelmingly twice.

With less than two weeks before Britain is due to leave the EU, Mrs May seems to be clinging on to her waning authority by a thread after a series of humiliating defeats.

Still, Mrs May has an arduous task ahead.

It resulted in 188 Conservatives - more than half the parliamentary party - voted against her motion on the grounds that it would break the party's commitment to leaving on 29 March. "She will bring it back for a third time next week and (it) probably stands a better than 50-50 chance of passing despite everything".
