Derry awaits decision on 1972 killings — Bloody Sunday

The sole prosecution is seen as a "terrible disappointment" by some of the families of the 13 people killed.

The day came to be known as Bloody Sunday, one of the worst days of the Northern Ireland Troubles.

"The Bloody Sunday families are not finished yet", he said.

Soldier F, who is believed to be in his 60s, will face prosecution for the murders of Jim Wray, 22, and William McKinney, 27, and the attempted murders of Joseph Friel, Michael Quinn, Joe Mahon and Patrick O'Donnell.

As with all military witnesses at the Saville Inquiry, the former paratrooper was granted anonymity as he gave evidence.

The Public Prosecution Service said on Thursday that one former soldier will be prosecuted for the murder and attempted murder of civilian protesters.

James Wray's brother Liam said he was "very saddened for the other families" of those killed on Bloody Sunday.

"Their hearts must be broken", he said.

"The families of the victims should be honoured for their determination, dignity and continued bravery on behalf of those who were so brutally murdered and they will continue to be supported", Mr Martin said.

John Kelly, whose 17-year-old brother Michael was shot dead, said: "The dead can not cry out for justice, it is the duty of the living to do so for them".

"How many more of us are going to have to go through it?"

Alan Barry, from the Justice for Northern Ireland Veterans campaign group, said he feared the paratroopers would face charges, accusing the justice system in Northern Ireland of being one-sided.

Linda Nash, sister of victim William Nash whose death is not being prosecuted, told the media she felt "let down".

"Willie was not a stone-thrower, a bomber or a gunman".

The first public inquiry, held soon after the deaths in 1972, mostly cleared the soldiers of wrongdoing.

Northern Ireland's Public Prosecution Service (PPS) has announced the charge today as families gathered in Londonderry.

"Consideration will now be given to allegations of perjury in respect of those suspects reported by police", he said.

UK Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson confirmed the government would support Soldier F and pay his legal costs.

Within weeks of the shootings, the British prime minister imposed direct British rule, which lasted until the 1998 Good Friday peace deal set out complex power-sharing arrangements for Northern Ireland.

"The welfare of our former service personnel is of the utmost importance", Williamson said in a statement.

"The Ministry of Defense is working across government to drive through a new package of safeguards to ensure our armed forces are not unfairly treated".

That is typical of a government which continues to cover up its role in the conflict and still delays the establishment of the legacy mechanisms agreed in the Stormont House agreement five years ago.

"Saville said Wray, who posed no great danger, was shot twice in the back and there were four soldiers who could have fired at him - soldiers E, F, G or H".

It was only in 2010, after a 12-year inquiry that High Court Judge Lord Saville, reversed the findings of Lord Widgery's 1972 inquiry. "In these circumstances, the evidential test for prosecution is not met".

The majority of demonstrators were instead directed towards Free Derry Corner in the Bogside. I have heard people talk about soldiers being "let loose". Two people were shot and wounded.

At 16:10, soldiers began to open fire.

According to Army evidence, 21 soldiers fired their weapons, discharging 108 live rounds between them.
