Trump vetoes rejection of his emergency declaration

Trump Again Threatens Europe With Tariffs: Expect Instant Global Recession - Mish Talk

It is the first time in his two years in office that Trump has used his presidential veto power to block legislation and comes after a dozen Senate Republicans joined Democrats to rebuke Trump's use of his national emergency power to bypass Congress and fund construction of a border wall.

The Senate passed its resolution 59-41, with 12 Republicans including Mitt Romney and Marco Rubio voting for it, prompting a one-word Trump tweet in response. A dozen Republicans defected and joined every Democrat in voting yes. The resolution had previously passed the Democrat-controlled House.

It is not believed there are enough votes to override the president's veto, which would require a two-thirds majority in both chambers. "This is not about the president or border security, in fact I support border security, I support a barrier".

Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., had said he would oppose the declaration but reversed course on the Senate floor, saying that he was "sympathetic" to Trump's push to deal with the crisis at the border. The dozen senators who went against the White House were Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Roy Blunt of Missouri, Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, Rand Paul of Kentucky, Rob Portman of Ohio, Marco Rubio of Florida, Jerry Moran of Kansas, Roger Wicker of MS, and Mitt Romney and Mike Lee, both of Utah.

BREAKING: Trump Signs His First Veto Against Resolution Blocking Emergency Declaration

Twelve Republican senators banded together to deliver the forceful rebuke after expressing concerns that Trump's use of the national emergency declaration as an end-run around Congress violates the separation of powers and sets a bad precedent that a would-be future Democratic president could follow to unilaterally drive their agenda.

The president made a border wall a central promise of his 2016 campaign for the White House. "This will help stop Crime, Human Trafficking, and Drugs entering our Country", the president tweeted.

Trump declared a national emergency last month, after Congress authorized only $1.3 billion in border wall funding, far short of the $5.7 billion Trump had asked for. Hours later he flew to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida for a weekend of golf.
