Johnson & Johnson must pay cancer-stricken woman $29mn in latest talcum trial

California jury orders J&J to pay US$29 million in latest talc cancer trial

In December previous year, the company reiterated the safety of its products as a slew of drug regulators around the world such as the US FDA and India's Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) analysed samples of J&J products.

The nine-week trial that began on January 7 involved a jury that deliberated for two days before delivering the verdict in California Superior Court in Oakland, the report said.

A whopping 13,000 similar lawsuits have been filed across the country against the massive health care company.

"Studies of more than 100,000 men and women show that talc does not cause cancer or asbestos-related disease".

The plaintiff, Terry Leavitt, said she regularly used two J&J products in the 1960s and '70s containing talc. It has more than two dozen trials scheduled around the U.S. this year.

"We will pursue an appeal because Johnson's Baby Powder does not contain asbestos or cause cancer".

Golden Tate Agrees To Four-Year, $37.5M Deal With Giants
ESPN's Adam Schefter adds his deal is for four years, worth $37.5 million and $23 million is fully guaranteed. So the unenviable job of replacing the best receiver in the National Football League goes to.

NBC reports the company has "lost a string of court cases", including one past year in Los Angeles, California, where a jury awarded a woman $25.7 million after claiming the baby powder caused her cancer. Decades of tests by independent, non-litigation driven experts and institutions repeatedly confirm that Johnson's Baby Powder does not contain asbestos or cause cancer. The company has successfully persuaded courts to overturn previous jury verdicts.

'We respect the legal process and reiterate that jury verdicts are not medical, scientific or regulatory conclusions about a product, ' J&J said in a statement on Wednesday. "We believe these issues will warrant a reversal on appeal".

"Yet another jury has rejected J&J's misleading claims that its talc was free of asbestos", said Moshe Maimon, a lawyer for Leavitt, in a statement on Wednesday. 'The internal J&J documents that the jury saw, once more laid bare the shocking truth of decades of cover- up, deception and concealment by J&J'.

While asbestos is classified as a known carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer and other groups, the ACS says the science on whether talcum powder causes cancer is more ambiguous.

In December, the New York Times reported that for years, Johnson & Johnson executives anxious that their talc-based products would one day be linked to asbestos. They said their baby powder "is safe and asbestos-free".

"I don't think they made a good case" that J&J's Baby Powder "contained a significant enough amount of asbestos contamination to cause the illness", she said.
