Wall Street ekes out gains at open after inflation data

Stocks are opening broadly higher on Wall Street although a sharp drop in Boeing is pushing the Dow Jones Industrial Average lower

The S&P 500 is up 284.67 points, or 11.4 per cent.

Visa (NYSE:) rose 1%, as Exxon Mobil (NYSE:) increased 1.3% and Goldman Sachs (NYSE:) was up 1.4%.

Aircraft giant Boeing's shares dropped almost 12 percent shortly after markets opened Monday, a day after an Ethiopian Airlines jet crashed, killing all 157 people on board.

Boeing went down a spiraling 5.3 percent after their plane 737 MAX 8jet crashed on Sunday. Futures contracts on the Dow Jones Industrial Average Index - where Boeing has the largest weighting - slid as much as 0.7 per cent yesterday after Flight ET302 plunged to the ground minutes after leaving Addis Ababa en route to Nairobi, Kenya, killing all 157 people on board.

The Labour Department said its Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 0.2%, in line with estimates, and in the 12 months through February, the CPI rose 1.5%, the smallest gain since September 2016.

May silver ended 13.9 cents, or 0.9%, higher at $15.413 an ounce.

The Nasdaq is up 182.89 points, or 2.5 per cent.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.60 percent.

Stocks are moving steadily higher in midday trading on Wall Street, putting the market on track for its third gain in a row.

The modest gains Tuesday follow a rally on Monday that snapped a five-day losing streak.

Google's parent company Alphabet rose 2.2 percent and Botox maker Allergan rose 2.1 percent.

The S&P 500 index rose 12 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 2,803. This decline shaved off close to 150 points from the Dow given its nature in the price-weighted stock's elevated price compared to a range of other Dow components. The Nasdaq rose 39 points, or 0.5 percent, to 7,579. The consumer price index rose a modest 1.5 percent last month from a year ago.

US stocks closed in a mixed mode on Tuesday, 12 March 2019 led by the health care and utilities sectors, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average retreated as shares of Boeing came under heavy pressure following a fatal crash over the weekend of a 737 Max aircraft. Bank stocks also showed early strength, with Morgan Stanley gaining 1.6 percent. Boeing lost 3 percent as more of its 737 Max 8 jets are idled following the second crash involving the jet model in less than five months.

The S&P 500 posted 45 new 52-week highs and 1 new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 67 new highs and 21 new lows.

USA stocks rose on Tuesday as benign February inflation data supported the Federal Reserve's dovish stance on future rate hikes, but Boeing's fall for a second straight session pressured the Dow.

Apple rose 2% and was the biggest boost to the S&P and Nasdaq, after the iPhone maker invited media to a March 25 event where it is expected to launch a television and video service.
