Van Riemsdyk scores twice as Flyers top Wild

Flyers’ Scott Gordon on facing Penguins ‘We have to treat this like a playoff game

Van Riemsdyk, who had a hat trick during a 7-4 win over Minnesota last month, helped the Flyers bounce back after their 9-0-1 run ended with a 4-1 home loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday.

Van Riemsdyk broke a 4-4 tie on a power play with 4:29 remaining, banking home a rebound off Devan Dubnyk in a scramble near the net. His shot from a sharp angle appeared to hit off the crossbar, but at the next stoppage the play was reviewed.

Desperate to move into playoff position in the Eastern Conference, Philadelphia trailed 3-1 after one period but evened the score heading to the second intermission.

Philadelphia tied it at 6:30 when the Wild got caught in a line change, leaving Giroux and Jakub Voracek alone on a two-man rush. It's a somewhat dubious distinction for a player with four career fighting majors to his resume and a player who has used the business end of a hockey stick to do far more good, like winning a pair of scoring titles and both regular and postseason MVP honors.

Game notes: Pittsburgh D Olli Maatta didn't return after being checked into the boards by Phil Varone with six minutes left in the first.

Liverpool defender Matip happy to give Klopp headache
Virgil Van Dijk is suspended for the first leg against Munich and Joe Gomez recovering from a fractured leg. They were huge wins for Jurgen Klopp's side as the team was growing into the devastating force they are now.

But the Wild recovered quickly, thanks in part to two quick Flyers penalties that gave Minnesota a two-man advantage for 1:52. With almost two full minutes of 5-on-3 time, the Wild were able to cash in, as Zach Parise beat Anthony Stolarz from the side of the net. He lost the puck while doing so, but Sean Couturier followed up and scored through the five-hole of Dubnyk for his team-leading 24th goal of the season.

The loss was another blow for Minnesota, which is 1-4-2 since the All-Star break.

The game could have been different, too, after a second-period goal by Nolan Patrick was waved off after a quick whistle by the referee. The teams will next play each other on February 23 in an outdoor game at Lincoln Financial Field, the home of the Philadelphia Eagles.

"We play like that, we won't have to worry about anything", interim coach Scott Gordon said. That's what I told the players: nobody quit and we just stayed with it. The Flyers loaned goalie Brian Elliot to Lehigh Valley (AHL) for a conditioning stint on Tuesday. He has since been placed on the Injured Reserve list and will be out indefinitely.
