IBM's AI machine loses debate against a human

IBM's Project Debater loses to human champ

The victor of the night was decided by the audience, who used their smartphones to vote in favor of the man or the machine on stage.

Natarajan, world record holder of debates wins, joined IBM's Project Debater AI last Monday at the company's Think conference.

The lead investigator for Project Debater, AI scientist Noam Slonim, seemed pleased with how well IBM's technology performed. "But it was able to pinpoint relevant points for the debate".

Debater also went on to say cite a 2013 study "by the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research", which it said "shows that attendance at preschool has a significant positive impact on later NAPLAN outcomes, particularly in the domains of numeracy, reading and spelling". In memory Debater contains more than 10 billion sentences of 300 million scientific articles from which he drew the necessary arguments. For those who are interested in the debate bot, IBM is hosting an "experimental cloud-based AI platform for crowdsourcing decision support", which they were undoubtedly hoping to drum up support for with this stunt.

Project Debater, which has been in the works since 2012, is designed to come up with coherent, convincing speeches of its own, while taking in the arguments of a human opponent and creating its own rebuttal.

Aharonov believed that would make the technology underpinning Project Debater attractive to enterprises.

Chris Cornell Wins Grammy For Best Rock Performance
Toni jumped in and concluded the speech by saying "his voice was his vision and his music was his peace". She walked the carpet alongside her brother, Christopher , and their mother/Cornell's widow Vicky.

However, it said, "I suspect you've never debated a machine. Welcome to the future". Both sides were informed of the topic only 15 minutes before the actual debate, but the human champion managed to persuade the audience and win. He added that the AI's arguments were "nicely phrased and contextualized", and that it could be "quite powerful" when used by humans.

While Natarajan ended up winning the contest, the event successfully demonstrated that the computer was capable of making increasingly complex arguments, CNN reports.

"In debate, there's no right or wrong answer", Soffer said. "It's about weighing different options, which is what we face everyday in the real world". By the end, 62 percent of the crowd agreed and 30 percent disagreed. Since then, IBM has been working on to improve Project Debater's rebutting skills. For example, personal assistants can help us find directions, play our music or call our contacts.

The pair, moderated by Intelligence Squared host John Donvan, delivered arguments for and against the resolution "We should subsidize preschool". It comes two decades after IBM's Deep Blue went head to head with chess champion Garry Kasparov in the mid-1990s, and a few years after Google's DeepMind competed against the world's best Go players.

"Former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam said in 1973, 'Preschool is the greatest single aid in removing or modifying the inequalities of background, environment, family income or family nationality", Project Debater told the audience during its opening remarks, borrowing from a 1972 speech.
