Half of American children with mental health condition going untreated

Alberta government announces new children and adolescent mental health centre at Edmonton's Glenrose Hospital Monday Feb. 11 2019

Half of all American children with a mental health condition are not getting the necessary treatment.

The team of researchers from University of MI looked at data from the 2016 National Survey of Children's Health.

"Kids and teens will have access to hospital beds if they need treatment for their mental health, they will also have access to school-based programming right here on site, and the care will include specialized therapeutic programs that are proven to be beneficial to stronger emotional and mental health."
From the 50,212 surveys completed, the authors from Michigan Medicine at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor estimated that 16.5 percent - 7.7 million - of 46.6 million children nationwide have at least one mental health disorder, and 49.4 percent of children with a mental health disorder did not receive needed treatment or counseling from a mental health professional. For example, the prevalence of children with at least one mental health disorder ranged from 7.6 percent in Hawaii to 27.2 percent in ME and the prevalence of children with a mental health disorder not treated or counseled by a mental health professional ranged from 29.5 percent in Washington, D.C., to 72.2 percent in North Carolina. The variety of kids with a recognized psychological health situation who wasn't handled by a supplier additionally ranged extensively, from 29.5% within the District of Columbia to 72.2% in North Carolina.

Mental health treatment is not usually a once-every-couple-months type of environment", she said.

The next big issue is insurance coverage, Robles-Ramamurthy said.

The new facility will provide treatment for children in Edmonton and northern Alberta for mental health and substance abuse.

There are many systems in this country aimed at caring for children, explained Robles-Ramamurthy, including the education system, the health care system, the juvenile justice system and the child welfare system. Mautone said in her statement, "All of these systems that are supposed to be caring for children often times are not talking to each other".
