US Breast Cancer Deaths Averted Over Three Decades

Mount Sinai's Digital 3-D Mammography Van Rolls Into New York City

The new study estimates that regular screening plus improved treatments cut the expected rate of breast cancer death in 2018 by between 45 to 58 percent, according to the study published February 11 in the journal Cancer. The good news is more than half of deaths linked to the disease were prevented in the USA over the past three decades; however, there's a big racial gap in Georgia.

Up to 86,000 women in their thirties with a family history of breast cancer should receive annual mammograms, researchers say. Women with a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors are often advised to be screened before 40.

Based on the findings, leading United Kingdom clinicians and researchers suggest that regular screening in women identified at moderate or high risk of breast cancer could be lowered to women aged 35-39.

"These are the first significant data on the benefits of screening in women aged 35-39", he said.

Thirty four United Kingdom screening centres took part in the trial, finding that mammograms for women from 35 to 39 with a moderate or high risk of breast cancer were able to detect tumours at a significantly smaller size compared to those found in women screened later in life.

The BTHO Breast Cancer Game will also feature a survivors walk at half-time for women who have either defeated breast cancer or are now battling it. 28 of those discovered were smaller than 2cm in size, 7 had spread to the lymph nodes. Hence, before allowing it to spread in the entire body, these small tumors could be removed permanently to prevent women from breast cancer.

"Longer-term follow-up is now required to determine the impact of this screening on women's overall survival and any impact on their future risk of primary breast cancer - while health economic analysis will be needed to assess whether such screening could be extended to both "moderate" and "high" risk women".

Lead author Professor Evans described the results of the trial as "very promising". African-American women are more likely to die from breast cancer than non-hispanic white women.

However, only about half of women over 40 get regular mammograms.

Breast cancer is Britain's most common cancer, affecting 55,000 women a year and killing nearly 12,000.

Breast Cancer Now's chief executive Baroness Delyth Morgan said: "This could be an enormous breakthrough". "While we anticipate new scientific advances that will further reduce breast cancer deaths and morbidity, it is important that women continue to comply with existing screening and treatment recommendations", he said.

An NHS England spokesperson said an upcoming review will consider changes to the screening programme.
