Mickelson takes Major lift from fifth 'Pebble' title after vintage show

Phil Mickelson

Phil Mickelson praised Paul Casey's decision to take the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am into a fifth day after completing his victory on Monday.

CBS will provide live coverage of the event via its website, with coverage starting at 11 a.m. ET and continuing until play is finished.

Overnight leader Casey had a three-shot advantage over Mickelson at the start of the day, but the five-time major victor made up the deficit with three birdies in the front nine and three more after the turn.

Casey was at 15 under, tied with Scott Stallings, who closed with a 66.

Phil Mickelson has downplayed suggestions that his win at Pebble Beach on Monday will have any bearing on his chances of completing the career grand slam when the U.S. Open is contested at the same venue in June.

The five-time Major victor has nothing to prove to anyone although I can't help thinking that Tiger Woods's return to winning ways a year ago might have spurred him on. Casey and FedEx executive Don Colleran had a one-shot lead in the pro-am. I would love nothing more than to add to it five months from now, but that's so far down the road.

As Jim Nantz stated in a post I wrote earlier this year, Pebble Beach seems like the ideal place for Lefty to finally get that U.S. Open win.

Mickelson was standing on the 17th tee when he heard the horn sound to stop play, and he shook his head.

Mickelson had not won on U.S. soil since the 2013 Phoenix Open. He won the British Open that summer in Scotland, and the Mexico Championship past year.

"A phenomenal round of golf, " Casey said.

Currently, Woods leads the PGA Tour with a 68.42 scoring average in the third round, and average that ranges from 46th to 133rd in the other three rounds. All four players return to Pebble along with numerous game's best, including Jordan Spieth, Tony Finau and Jason Day.

After playing the 17th and 18th on Monday, Mickelson admitted Casey was right.

The American, who started the final round at Pebble Beach three shots back, ended with a three-shot lead with two holes left to play.

Pebble Beach was so soft that balls were plugging in the fairway when they landed.

"I can see fine", Mickelson told a rules official on the 16th green. "This golf course, it looks very gettable [but] it can expose you".

But the final day, and all week, was about the ageless Mickelson. This morning we came out and the greens were much better. "I just get in my own little bubble and I don't see the big picture".

He gained ground with birdies at the par-five second and the fourth, then made back-to-back birdies at the ninth and 10th - two of the toughest holes on the course.
