Mars One Is Bankrupt And Down For The Count

Mars One’s ill-fated dream unsurprisingly ends in bankruptcy

In case you missed the news yesterday: A redditor discovered a Swiss court filing from January in which Mars One was officially declared bankrupt. Along the way, Mars One also fended off accusations that it was running a scam, getting people to pay almost $40 for a remote chance to travel in space. The second division of Mars One, headquartered in the Netherlands, continues its work managing the project. "The goal of the investor and Mars One is to achieve either a reversal of the administration or a restart based on a financial agreement with the liquidator".

For now, that's all Mars One is saying on the matter. A portion of the press release explains what the company has been doing lately, which has very little to do with traveling to Mars: During the last few months, discussions have been held with a new investment company. Among the many scandalous details, that report claimed that just 2,761 people had applied to Mars One-a far cry from the claimed number in the tens and eventually hundreds of thousands. And then, things went from "dream on" to "oh, no".

Describing its potential astronauts, Mars One said it was looking for people who are "intelligent, creative, psychologically stable and physically healthy".

Manchester United suffer heaviest home European loss
As I said on BBC Radio 5 live before the PSG game, whatever happens in this tie does not change any of that. Substitute Sanchez was again anonymous and Solskjaer admitted the Chilean's lack of form was an issue.

The project also prompted anthropologist and author Barbara J. King to ask, "Are people eager to leave behind everyone they love - for the rest of their lives - good candidates to succeed at forging a tight-knit colony on Mars?" The total debts of Mars One amount to CHF 1.1 million (approximately € 1 million).

"We don't have the technology to go to Mars, with everything we know today, so I don't think that a marketing company and a TV-type of selection, is sending anybody anywhere", she added. After all, Mars One itself isn't an engineering firm, and has no operations in building space craft.

Founder Bas Lansdorp, confirmed the news to Engadget and told the publication he was "working to find a solution".
