Gov. Cuomo to meet with Trump about impact of tax changes

Andrew Cuomo

The Democratic governor met with the Republican president to discuss the $10,000 cap on the federal deduction for state and local taxes - known as SALT.

While Trump has praised the tax overhaul, Cuomo says he hopes the deduction limit might be repealed now that Democrats control the U.S. House.

The White House said the meeting demonstrated Trump's willingness to meet regularly with the nation's governors.

The president "raised his concerns to Governor Cuomo about Democrats' support of late-term abortions", said Deputy press secretary Judd Deere in a statement.

Only 35 percent of voters said Cuomo was doing an "excellent" or "good" job, with 64 percent rating his performance as "fair" or "poor". The cap effectively raises federal taxes on people who pay more in property taxes and state income tax. "The President reiterated the negative impact that high taxes in states like NY have on hardworking families and job creators".

Trump has blasted late-term abortion proponents in NY state and Virginia in recent days, raising the issue in his State of the Union address.

Michael Zona, a spokesman for Republicans on the Senate Finance Committee, said the committee won't be revisiting the SALT deduction changes under Republican Sen. New Yorkers are not entirely thrilled with the two Empire State Democrats. But Republican congressional leaders argue that it primarily benefits Democratic-leaning higher-tax states.

Under New York's progressive income tax system, 1 percent of the top earners provide almost half the state's income tax revenues. The same holds true for residents in New Jersey and California.

But Tuesday's conversation wasn't limited to taxes and tax legislation.

Political interest in the issue is rising during the tax filing season, the first under the new tax law, as some taxpayers who were expecting to get a refund are finding out they instead owe money to the Internal Revenue Service.

Cuomo plans to travel to Washington on Tuesday and return to NY later in the day, a spokesman said. "I think we'll see talk, but I don't think it will move through the current legislative environment". "With the administration and this Congress, it's not likely to happen".
