Trump signs AI initiative to ensure American leadership

Trump administration unveils order to prioritise and promote AI

The executive order does not include any details about funding the initiative.

The U.S.is the global leader in AI technology right now, but other countries are catching up fast.

"By driving technological breakthroughs in AI, breaking barriers to innovation, preparing our workforce for the jobs of the future, and protecting American advantage in AI, we're ensuring artificial intelligence technologies continue to improve the lives of our people, create jobs, reflect our nation's values and keep Americans safe at home and overseas", the official said.

"We can not sit idly by and presume that our leadership is guaranteed", according to a statement released by White House on Monday.

Monday's order envisions regulatory guidance to ensure the technology is trustworthy, said the White House official.

Wales ‘Get Out Of Jail’ To Beat Italy
The Italians extended their own record streak with a 19th straight defeat in the Six Nations since 2015. Italy already looks consigned to a fourth consecutive wooden spoon.

"Heads of implementing agencies that also perform or fund R&D (AI R&D agencies), shall consider AI as an agency R&D priority", the order states, noting, "Heads of such agencies shall take this priority into account when developing budget proposals and planning for the use of funds in Fiscal Year 2020 and in future years".

The Hill noted that other United States agencies, such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), were rushing to invest in AI that will "improve predictions of hurricanes and severe storms", according to an agency statement obtained by the publication. Additionally, the directive will authorize expanded access to government data for researchers to help advance the technologies.

But so far, New Zealand is behind other countries in encouraging AI, and creating an ethical framework, Callaghan boss Victoria Crone says.

Artificial intelligence is seen as a way to generate advancements across multiple fields, from defense to health care to transportation.

It directs federal agencies to make data and computing resources more available to artificial intelligence experts while maintaining security and confidentiality. Lastly, the US will foster worldwide collaboration for AI.
