Numbers favor Kentucky by 7 points at Mississippi State

Mississippi State guard Nick Weatherspoon drives around Kentucky guard Keldon Johnson during Saturday’s game at Humphrey Coliseum

Teaira McCowan had 24 points and 15 rebounds and Jordan Danberry added 20 points as the Bulldogs earned their biggest margin of victory in the series in front of 10,021 fans at Humphrey Coliseum.

"I think we handled it well", Schaefer said Friday night of his team's bye Thursday.

His play on both ends has helped Kentucky cover in six straight SEC games, and the Wildcats' defense has been impressive overall during that span.

The final score didn't indicate how tough this win was for the Bulldogs, who saw their lead dwindle to 47-44 midway through the third quarter. Mississippi State rallied to close the quarter with a 61-49 advantage.

The Bulldogs are 10-2 at home this season and are a team loaded with upperclassmen like senior guard Quinndary Weatherspoon, who's averaging 18 points and 5.5 rebounds per game this season.

MSU opened the fourth going four of five from the floor while UT went cold, hitting just one of three in the opening two minutes. As a result, their entire offense was about trying to push the ball in transition and hoping they could hit some outside shots.

Tennessee's Rennia Davis scored 29 points on 13-of-22 shooting, including 18 in the first half.

Mississippi State (22-1, 10-0 Southeastern Conference) led 25-17 after one quarter and 40-34 at halftime. "I tried my best but she had the hot hand. I was in attack mode and she was in attack mode". Meme Jackson was off, but if she gets her form back and everybody else stays consistent, there are some positive things to build off of when Westbrook returns.

Mississippi State took advantage of Westbrook's absence.

Center Kasiyahna Kushkituah scored in double figures in four of her first five games this season before a knee injury forced her to miss three games and limited her mobility in the next 11 outings. Since their first meeting, the Cats have extended their winning streak from 5 to 9 games while Mississippi State has split its four games, beating #10 Auburn by 8 points and #45 Mississippi by 6 points while losing at #52 Alabama and to #22 LSU by 4 in OT. EJ Montgomery doubled up for the Wildcats in that one with 11 points and 13 rebounds, and Reid Travis added 11 points with nine boards.

Tennessee struggled with Mississippi State's combination of size and speed.

Mississippi State wraps up a three-game homestand against Alabama on Tuesday. "You can't make a lot of mistakes. They grind it out, they're competitors and I don't see any reason they can't compete for a championship". The Lady Vols came back with six straight to pull within three. Eight of those came in the fourth quarter. But the last time Tennessee visited Mississippi State has since haunted Bulldogs coach Vic Schaefer. So far this season, the Bulldogs have lost just twice at home this season, to rival MS, but being able to split this two-game homestand with LSU and Kentucky will be vital to the Bulldogs' at-large hopes. The Bulldogs are averaging 88 points per game, which ranks second nationally. But that loss to Tennessee still ate at Schaefer and the Mississippi State upper-class players who experienced it.
