Great Firewall fears as Russian Federation plans to cut itself off from internet

New legislation would require internet service providers to be able to route all exchanges of online information within Russia

In addition to being able to disconnect from the broader Internet, the proposed law also requires ISPs to install equipment to reroute all Russian traffic through the Roskomnazor, the government body that is responsible for censorship and tracking the online activities of Russian citizens.

They are also under orders to route internet traffic entering and leaving Russia through Russian-controlled gateways.

They want the ability to inspect traffic and ensure it is not routed outside of Russian Federation.

A date for the test has not been revealed, but it's supposed to take place before April 1, the deadline for submitting amendments to the law -known as the Digital Economy National Program.

The eventual plan is for all Russian internet traffic to pass through these new routing arrangements. The test disconnection would provide ISPs with data about how their networks would react.

Air New Zealand flight to Shanghai turned away on Taiwan reference
Exactly how much the difficulties in the relationship with China can be blamed on the Government is hard to know. She said the two countries "continued to discuss dates" for a visit sometime in 2019.

He added that it will be hard for them to shut down all the outside router points if they want to carry out the test, since they have to attack different servers from hundreds of providers, while only some of the providers are Russian companies.

In March previous year, Putin's then-Internet adviser, German Klimenko, said Russian Federation would be prepared with its own segment of the Internet should Western countries seek to punish it by cutting off all access.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and its allies have threatened to sanction Russian Federation over the cyber-attacks and other online interference which it is regularly accused of instigating. Ostensibly as a defensive measure, lawmakers want to build the technical infrastructure necessary to sustain the Russian segment of the Internet in isolation from the rest of the world.

RosBiznesKonsalting reported that a Kremlin source told the Russian news outlet that President Vladimir Putin supports the proposed law.

Ostensibly the goal of the legislation is to protect the Russian internet from the United States, which has an offensive cybersecurity strategy and lists Russia as one of the major sources of hacking attacks.
