California pulls most National Guard troops from U.S.-Mexico border

Gov. Gavin Newsom is expanding the size and role of the California governor's office

It follows a similar move last week by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico. "If we had a real Wall, this would be a non-event!" She withdrew most of her state's National Guard members from the border.

Now, two of the four states which share the Southern Border with Mexico are doing just that.

California Governor Gavin Newsom is poised to withdraw all 360 state troops from the US-Mexico border, in an apparent rebuttal of President Donald Trump's stance that there is a national security crisis there, media said on Monday.

California has repeatedly styled itself as the flagship resistance state to the Trump administration's policies.

Both Newsom and Grishman are new governors this year whose predecessors approved Trump's plan to have troops at the border. During a recent visit to San Diego, Newsom said "we should be celebrating" migrants who seek asylum legally and contrasted California's efforts to assist them - including a $25 million outlay in his first budget proposal - with what he called Trump's disingenuous narrative "that somehow these caravans are coming in to create havoc".

The Pentagon announced plans last week to send 3,750 troops to the border to install concertina wire and help Customs and Border Protection agents.

United States warships again challenge China's claims in South China Sea
The rising military tension comes against the backdrop of an increasingly bitter trade war between China and the US. She urged the United States to cease the "provocative actions".

"This will not be a mission to build a new wall", Brown wrote at the time in a letter to Trump administration officials.

In his Spanish-language response to the president's State of the Union address Tuesday, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra warned that he is prepared to take Trump to court if he declares a national emergency to fund a wall at the U.S. -Mexico border while cutting federal funds to fire-damaged communities in the state.

110 troops to support CalFire's wildfire prevention and suppression efforts.

But the National Guard has been aiding federal efforts along the border by handling duties that otherwise would have had to be performed by USA troops and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, including vehicle maintenance, administrative support and operating cameras on the border. The governor's office says some of these troops who are "specially trained counter-narcotic screeners" will be deployed to California ports of entry - both at the Mexican border and elsewhere.

In excerpts of his State of the State address released Sunday, Newsom says he plans to offer a contrast to the president's vision of America, calling it "fundamentally at odds with California values". "A quarter of a century later, we're more united than ever, and we're not going back".
