Turkey urges China to respect Uighur rights, close camps

Chinese authorities released a video on Sunday "confirming" Uighur poet and musician Abdurehim Heyit is still alive-something on which worldwide experts still maintain uncertainty.

"Turkey's Foreign Ministry calls on China to respect fundamental human rights of Uighur Turks and shut down concentration camps", the MFA further noted.

Beijing has intensified its clampdown on what it labels terrorism in the region, following a 2009 riot in Xinjiang capital Urumqi that killed hundreds.

Beijing says the "vocational education centres" help people stay clear of terrorism and allow them to be reintegrated into society.

"Uighurs who are not detained in these camps are under heavy pressure".

"It is no longer a secret that more than one million Uighur Turks - who are exposed to arbitrary arrests - are subjected to torture and political brainwashing in concentration centres and prisons".

The minister said Turkey had also learned of the death in prison of famed Uyghur musician and poet Abdurehim Heyit, who had been sentenced to eight years over one of his songs.

Roth praised Turkey's denunciation of China's mass detention of Uighur Muslims to force them to renounce Islam and stressed Turkey calling the tragedy in the Xinjiang region "a great embarrassment for humanity". The Turkic Muslim group, which makes up around 45 percent of Xinjiang's population, has long accused China's authorities of cultural, religious and economic discrimination.

In Saturday's statement, Turkey called on the worldwide community and the United Nations secretary-general "to take effective measures in order to bring to an end this human tragedy in Xinjiang".

In its last report released on last September, Human Rights Watch blamed the Chinese government for a "systematic campaign of human rights violations" against Uyghur Muslims in northwestern Xinjiang, an autonomous region in the country.

Adrian Zenz, lecturer at the European School of Culture and Theology, said the comments from Turkey are a "major new development".

"China has already made solemn representations toward Turkey".

An ABC investigation found that these camps span more than 2 million square metres, housing detainees forced to pledge their allegiance to the Chinese state under duress.
