Michelle Obama gets raucous applause at 2019 Grammy Awards

Grammys 2019

With the help of Katy Perry, Kacey Musgraves, Miley Cyrus, Maren Morris and more, the Queen of Country celebrated herself and her vast collection of iconic songs. "I'mma take care of you tonight".

Their absence was seen as a snub of an awards show that has often shut hip-hop artists out of its top prizes, despite rap's dominance as the biggest music genre in the United States. "Am I right or am I right?"

The former First Lady visited the Grammys to support her friends, Jennifer Lopez, Alicia Keys, Jada Pinkett Smith, Lady Gaga who were also present on stage with her. The other ladies too shared their thoughts about music.

Gaga kicked things off by sharing the familiar story of the challenges she faced trying to be an unconventional artist in a conventional industry. "They said I was weird". That my look, my choices, that my sound wouldn't work. "And music told me not to listen to them". Though the music was getting increasingly loud, she spoke about how anyone can achieve their dreams and she's achieved hers.

Then stepped in Lopez, who said, "Back in the Bronx, music gave me a reason to dance..."

Backstage, Lopez told ET's Kevin Frazier that it came from the mind of Keys herself.

A representative for the Grammys didn't return an email seeking clarification about the tribute. And then there was a loud noise of glass shattering in the background.

For Smith, music played a different, but no less important, role throughout her life.

As soon as Obama, wearing a silver sequin suit, started to speak, the audience erupted, offering Obama a standing ovation and a prolonged applause before she could get her speech out. "But here's what I know". Every story within every voice. She and her husband, former US President Barack Obama, signed deals for a book apiece with Penguin Random House a month after Obama left office in January 2017.

The crowd couldn't contain their excitement when Obama stepped out on stage. "Music helps us share ourselves, our dignity and sorrows, our hopes, our joys. Music has always been the one place we can all feel truly free".

Alicia Keys had some powerful women by her side during the opening monologue of the 61st annual Grammy Awards on Sunday.

Alicia Keys made a decision to get some help to kick off the Grammys and it drove the crowd wild. Additionally, she performed a bit of "Killing Me Softly" to honor Roberta Flack, who celebrated her 81st birthday one Sunday (the song was, of course, later famously covered by Lauryn Hill and The Fugees). "What is better than this?"

Keys, Gaga, Dolly Parton, Miley Cyrus, Janelle Monae, Diana Ross, Katy Perry and best country album Grammy victor Kacey Musgraves also performed.
