Microsoft cybersecurity expert says you should stop using Internet Explorer

Microsoft Drag Internet Explorer to the Trash. No ReallyMore

Microsoft has in recent years encouraged users to adopt its more modern web browser, the Microsoft Edge, which was released in 2015. It should be noted that Microsoft don't even support Internet Explorer anymore, since the company announced back in 2016 that they will be killing support for Internet Explorer 8, Internet Explorer 9 and Internet Explorer 10.

It baffles me why people are still using Microsoft's ancient Internet Explorer, and now even Microsoft themselves have kindly asked Explorers users to upgrade and let the browser die.

Unfortunately, Internet Explorer isn't equipped to handle the modern web. He would invariably end up using a 1999 implementation of web standards by default. Consider that a decade ago, IE claimed around two-thirds of the browser market, and by some metrics it was still the dominant browser at the start of 2012.

Record-Setting Number of Guns Found in Airline Baggage in 2018
Orlando International Airport was the fifth worst offender in 2018 with 123 firearms found, 112 of which were loaded. The 2018 firearms discoveries amount to 81.6 guns per week trying to get through security, or 11.6 firearms per day.

'You see, Internet Explorer is a compatibility solution, ' Jackson explained. The fact of the matter is that while most average internet users have moved on to Google Chrome, Firefox, or Microsoft's Edge, some businesses are still working with older web apps or sites that were designed for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Worldwide Lead for Application Compatibility Chris Jackson said this week that IE isn't really a browser but a "compatibility solution" to deal with legacy sites. Jackson said this sort of thinking "seems like a deliberate decision to take on some 'technical debt, '" as he put it. Microsoft no longer supports IE with new web standards, which is at the core of the problem.

"If we continued our previous approach, you would end up in a scenario where, by optimizing for the things you have, you end up not being able to use new apps as they come out", he wrote.

To be clear, Jackson isn't saying that anyone who still needs IE should dump it outright. "What I'm trying to say here is I hope you don't use it for everything else", Jackson said. Hindsight is 20/20 though, right?
