John Dingell, Longest Serving Member Of US Congress, Dies At 92

Political giant John Dingell dies at 92

On Wednesday, Dingell's wife Rep. While we didn't always agree on issues, I enjoyed Congressman Dingell's company and admired his patriotism, his love for our state, and our shared love for the University of MI.

"He will be remembered for his decades of public service to the people of Southeast Michigan, his razor sharp wit, and a lifetime of dedication to improving the lives of all who walk this earth".

Former President Bill Clinton once said that presidents come and go, but "John Dingell goes on forever". The Democrat was a master of legislative deal-making and a staunch advocate for the USA auto industry.

Dingell announced in 2014 he would retire from the House after representing Michigan's 12th District for almost 60 years, surpassing Sen.

The historian for the House of Representatives noted that Dingell served with 2,427 members of the House, or 22 percent of the House's total membership, 11 presidents, and 11 speakers of the House. Mr. Dingell is wrong in citing me, but quite correct in citing the pledge as a substantial blow to the left. It was a lesson learned at home from my father and mother, and one I have tried to impart to the people I've served with and employed over the years.

Dingell, whose district was home to the Ford Motor Company, had always been a strong supporter of the auto industry but also stressed environmental issues over the years.

For more than 16 years Dingell led the powerful House Energy and Commerce Committee, which is responsible for overseeing the Medicare and Medicaid programs, the U.S. Public Health Service, the Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health.

In a joint statement, Bill and Hillary Clinton said that they "are grateful to have had the chance to work with him, to celebrate his becoming the longest-serving member of Congress in history, and most of all, to call him our friend".

His Emmy was given for his performance as Winston Churchill in the BBC-HBO movie, The Gathering Storm (2002). The Oscar-winning film bagged Finney nominations for Best Actor at the Oscars, BAFTAs and Golden Globes.

Trump has been the subject of his criticism in recent years, but more broadly, Dingell has been knocking what he describes as a decline in institutionalism.

"I've gotten more death threats around here than I can remember", Dingell told The Associated Press in a 1995 interview.

In the op-ed, Dingell gave a parting message for his successors in Congress and beyond. "It is the complete collapse in respect for virtually every institution of government and an unprecedented cynicism about the nobility of public service itself".

John David Dingell Jr. was born on July 8, 1926, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the first of three children of John Dingell and the former Grace Bigler. He was exposed to politics at an early age when his father was elected to the House in 1932.

Alongside his congressman father, Dingell was serving as a page on the House floor when President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan on December 8, 1941. Dingell is said to have felled the animal with a pistol as it charged him during a hunting trip in Soviet Georgia.

Dingell was succeeded in Congress by his wife, Debbie Dingell, after he announced in February 2014 that he would not seek a 30th full term.

He was a longtime supporter of universal health care, a cause he adopted from his late father, whom he replaced in Congress in 1955.

Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Michigan) opened up about the loss of her husband, former Rep. John Dingell, in a heartbreaking Facebook post on Thursday morning.
