House GOP leader: ‘Action will be taken’ after King’s white supremacy comment

House votes to pay furloughed workers

Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy promises to take action against Iowa Rep. Steve King, following his comments about white supremacy.

McCarthy said on CBS' "Face The Nation" that he will meet with King on Monday to discuss the veteran lawmaker's future in the Republican Party.

Instead of answering directly, Scalise referred to Republicans' statements denouncing King's comments, and said "many Democrats" - he did not name them - had "aligned themselves with anti-Semites" and "called on physical violence".

The New York Times recently quoted King saying, "White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization - how did that language become offensive?"

King insisted on the House floor Friday that he's an advocate for Western civilization, not white supremacy or white nationalism, and that he isn't racist.

He said it was a "mistake" to use phrasing that "created an unnecessary controversy" and denied being racist.

Senator Tim Scott, a Republican representing SC, penned a thoughtful piece in The Washington Post on how some fellow Republicans like Steve King are damaging the party by spewing thoughts that lack basic fairness and civility yet wonder why the party is considered to be racist.

Following his on-camera interview, McCarthy told host Margaret Brennan that he is reviewing whether King will keep his congressional committee assignments, CBS reported.

McCarthy also on Sunday dismissed a report in The Washington Post that President Trump has concealed details of his meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

King serves on the Agriculture, Small Business and Judiciary committees, and chairs Judiciary's subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice.

In his interview with the Times, King said he's OK with immigrants of various races legally entering the US ― so long as American culture stays white and European. She did not elaborate.

Scott, the GOP's sole Black senator, rattled off examples of white nationalist terror that have rocked the country in recent years: the Kentucky man who fatally shot two African-Americans in a Kroger parking lot, the deadly "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Va., and the shooting massacre at a historic Black church in Scott's hometown of Charleston.

"What Steve King said was stupid", he said. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), and Sen. "It was stupid. It was hurtful".

Cruz joined other members of his party Sunday morning in criticizing King's words. It was wrong. And he needs to stop.
