Cargo plane crashes in Iran, at least 7 dead: Army

The aircraft, believed to be a Boeing 707 transporting cargo, mistakenly landed in Fath Airport near Karaj, a residential area near Iran's capital, but lost control and overshot the runway.

"We do not know yet whether it was an Iranian or foreign cargo plane", a local official told TV.

A spokeswoman for Kyrgyzstan's Manas airport said the plane, en route from Kyrgyzstan's Manas airport, belonged to Iran's Payam Air.

An Iranian air force cargo plane landing at the wrong airport crashed outside Tehran, killing 15 people on board, state-run Fars news agency reported. There was no immediate information on casualties.

According to local reports, the Boeing B707 mid-size aircraft was travelling from Bishkek, Kyrgyztan when it crashed after the pilot mistook Payam International Airport, in the Alborz Province near Tehran, with another airfield. Iranian media reported seven bodies from the crash had already been recovered.

A blackened hull of the plane is seen lying on the ground with dozens of rescue workers attending to the scene.

Iranian state television showed a plume of smoke rising from the crash site.
