British PM warns of "catastrophe" in last minute plea for Brexit deal

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May speaks outside 10 Downing Street after a confidence vote by Conservative Party Members of Parliament, in London Britain

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt has warned of "Brexit paralysis" if MPs vote down Theresa May's Withdrawal Agreement next week, potentially meaning the United Kingdom does not leave the European Union at all.

May looks little closer to securing the support she needs, but writing in the Sunday Express she said lawmakers must not let down the people who voted for Brexit.

Saying a rejection of the Brexit deal would be a catastrophic and unforgivable breach of trust, May urged the parliament to "forget the games and do what is right for our country".

Mrs May said the United Kingdom risks crashing out of the European Union without a deal or, if MPs are "unwilling" to face the uncertainty of no deal, then the United Kingdom may not leave at all.

At least two groups of rebel MPs are plotting to change Commons rules so motions proposed by backbenchers take precedence over government business, upending the centuries-old relationship between executive and legislature.

He warned Eurosceptics that they may not be able to rely on the clock ticking down to the default option of a no-deal Brexit on March 29 if Mrs May's deal is voted down.

It said Downing Street was "extremely concerned" about the possibility, which could see lawmakers then delay Brexit through new legislation.

On Monday the debate on the meaningful vote on Mrs May's deal will resume for a fourth day.

It came as a senior pro-Remain Tory said Brexit should be delayed if Mrs May's deal is defeated next week.

Without a deal, Britain faces an abrupt break from the European Union on March 29, and there are fears it could involve chaotic scenes at borders, ports and airports.

"If the UK is a genuine partnership of nations it is essential that the views of the people of Scotland, the Scottish Parliament and Scottish Government are taken seriously, and not ignored, when the vote on the UK Government's deal takes place on Tuesday". This week, lawmakers passed an amendment forcing the government to come back to Parliament with a new plan within three working days of the deal being rejected.

More than 100 Conservatives and 10 DUP MPs are among those set to oppose the government's deal on Tuesday.

- Pressure mounted on Jeremy Corbyn to trigger a confidence vote in the Government, but shadow chancellor John McDonnell said his party would make such a move when "the time is right". But many also dislike May's agreement, which has displeased both sides of Britain's Brexit divide.
