Tulsi Gabbard announces she will run for president in 2020

Tulsi Gabbard first Hindu and American Samoan member of Congress says she'll run for president in 2020

Democratic US Representative Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii said in remarks aired by CNN on Friday that she will run for president in 2020, becoming the latest member of her party to pursue a challenge to Republican President Donald Trump.

Gabbard, 37, said "the issue of war and peace" would be the main focus of her campaign.

Since being elected to the House, Gabbard became the vice-chair of the Democratic National Committee, but left the post so she could endorse Senator Bernie Sanders for the 2016 presidential nomination; she gave the nominating speech putting his name forward at the 2016 national convention. A source close to Gabbard confirmed to CBS News that she is running.

Due to her antiwar stance in Syria, Gabbard was at one point rumored to be a potential candidate to head Trump's State Department, and even met with the president-elect at Trump Tower in November 2016, but nothing came of it. "I'm seriously thinking of how I can best be of service to our country", she told Concord Monitor News reporter Paul Steinhauser before meeting with Rockingham County Democrats.

Gabbard, a native of American Samoa, was elected to the Hawaii State Legislature in 2002 at the age of 21, the youngest woman to be elected to a state legislature in USA history at the time.

She made waves recently for saying in a tweet that President Trump is "Saudi Arabia's bitch" for announcing the USA will stand with Saudi Arabia, regardless of any intelligence community assessment on Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's involvement in the killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.

Another Democrat is jumping into the quickly forming 2020 Democratic presidential primary contest.

"I have chose to run and will be making a formal announcement within the next week", Gabbard said. "Liberals think she's too conservative, conservatives think she's too liberal, and just about everyone thinks her coziness with Bashar al-Assad is disturbing", said Ahrens. Former Vice President Joe Biden and former Rep. Robert Francis "Beto" O'Rourke (D-TX) are also reportedly considering running for president. Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren announced the formation of a presidential exploratory committee at the end of a year ago.
