Justin Langer slams journalist when asked out Glenn Maxwell’s omission

Glenn Maxwell

In September a year ago, Maxwell had said he felt "a little bit" misled after being overlooked for the two-Test series against Pakistan in the UAE having rejected an offer to play county cricket and missed the Australia A tour of India to remain fresh.

Justin Langer looks on after Australia lost the their recent test series to India.

However, when Maxwell wasn't selected for that A tour, it was seen by many he was guaranteed a seat on the plane to the UAE for the two-test series against Pakistan. "Careless whispers, hey", he added before apologising.

Langer later apologised, saying: "Sorry for getting grumpy". "I don't like getting grumpy but there are so many stories that go around about so much stuff. I didn't mean to get grumpy, but the truth is a handsome thing".

Speculation has been swirling that Maxwell was overlooked because of personal differences with senior Cricket Australia officials.

Langer was asked about the claim Maxwell was told not to play County cricket in England in order to focus on his white-ball form ahead of this year's World Cup.

Later in the day, CA confirmed that before Langer's appointment as head coach in May a planning email had been sent to Maxwell about his winter schedule and that he had been encouraged to take a break between the end of a Twenty20 tri-series Zimbabwe on July 8 and the Australia A tour of India several weeks later.

Maxwell has played in seven Tests for Australia since debuting in 2013 as the Victorian continues to be left in the red-ball wilderness.

The Canadian PressOttawa Mayor Jim Watson described the incident at Westboro station as "horrific" on Twitter . Several people have been injured in a collision involving an OC Transpo bus at Westboro station, police say.

Justin Langer had a temporary role earlier in West Indies.

Langer said Maxwell, who was not picked in Australia's 13-man squad for two Tests against Sri Lanka in Brisbane and Canberra, knew exactly where he stood and that there were no personality-related issues contributing to his non-selection. I've got zero knowledge of that. careless whispers, eh? "He has shown he is brilliant around the group in white-ball cricket".

During the media conference, Langer had addressed Maxwell's omission from the Test squad for Sri Lanka and the "false" reports about the right-hander's personality as a contributing factor to his selection chances, reinforcing the message Hohns delivered.

"All the conjecture about it, that's all part of the noise".

However, it had come after Trevor Hohns, the chairman of selectors, clarified that he wasn't sure about any such instruction or from where had it come from.

"I had a few offers to play county cricket in England and they were initially knocked back with an opportunity to go and play in India in the A series", Maxwell said at the time.

"This is a pretty clear sign that I still want to play Test cricket".
