IBM Unveils World’s First Commercial Quantum Computer at CES

IBM Q System One display

IBM wants the Q to be perceived as a symbolic first step in the commercial quantum-computing race. The exterior of the Q System One made entirely in glass was developed by Goppion, a famous company based in Milan, known for their fantastic room design of the Mona Lisa expo from The Louvre.

The custom components of IBM Q System One are created to complement each other so it can serve what IBM sees as the most advanced cloud-based quantum computing program available.

The senior vice president and the director of the IBM research had some words regarding this and he said that this IBM Q system one is like a great step for commercializing the quantum computers although this system could be a bit more systematic for the computing issues and they are also sometimes beyond the research walls and lab but still if these are practically implemented, it is really going to help the system issues for sure. It includes quantum hardware design for repeatable and predictable high-quality qubits (or quantum bits), cryogenic engineering to maintain cold temperature and an isolated environment, high-precision electronics to control large numbers of qubits, and secure cloud access alongside hybrid execution of quantum algorithms. It tapped the expertise of United Kingdom industrial and interior design studios Map Project Office and Universal Design Studio, and Goppion, a Milan-based manufacturer of high-end museum display cases that protect some of the world's most precious art including the Mona Lisa at the Louvre, and the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London.

IBM Q System One combines classical and quantum computing elements into a single architecture. The new partnership was formally announced during CES 2019. In fact, IBM itself already built a more powerful quantum system prototype capable of handling 50-qubits machine back in 2017.

She said that quantum computing will be embraced by such industries as chemistry and materials, logistics and risk management, where calculations are so complicated that much of the work is done now based on approximations.

NFL Coaching Tracker: Bengals Targeting Rams QB Coach Zac Taylor
The Cardinals hired Kingsbury, and now it looks like the Bengals are primed to hire a direct understudy of the Rams head coach. Taylor knows the Cincinnati area well, having been the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bearcats in 2016.

This centre will expand the capabilities of IBM's Q Network commercial quantum computing program.

IBM explained that "qubits quickly lose their special quantum properties, typically within 100 microseconds (for state-of-the-art superconducting qubits), due in part to the interconnected machinery's ambient noise of vibrations, temperature fluctuations, and electromagnetic waves". The front doors of the Q System One can be open simultaneous, offering access to it's different cooling and control modules masked by a panel behind the main terminal.

The resulting design is a 3m by 3m case of 1cm thick borosilicate glass forming a sealed, airtight enclosure. The cube is also reinforced with a series of independent aluminum and stainless steel frames that ensure structural integrity while reducing vibration and other interference.

Quantum computing holds the promise of running workloads and solving problems that are beyond the reach of even the most powerful supercomputers today.

"The IBM Q Network includes the recent additions of Argonne National Laboratory, CERN, ExxonMobil, Fermilab, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory".
