Derby County: Leeds United contacted over training ground 'spy'

DOUBTFUL Pablo Hernandez right

Derby County on Friday said that the man spotted acting suspicious outside of the club's training ground on Thursday, and whose presence prompted the club to contact police, is a member of staff at Leeds United.

"Officers conducted routine checks which were all above board".

Derbyshire Police attended County's training ground on Thursday after a man was seen at the perimeter fence of the Moor Farm complex.

The Rams have made a positive start under Frank Lampard so far, with 43 points from 26 Championship games.

United head coach Marcelo Bielsa is known to have used covert analysis of opposition training sessions during his time as coach of Newell's Old Boys in the 1990s but Leeds have as yet made no response to Derby's claims.

Championship leaders Leeds host sixth-placed Derby (LIVE on ESPN+, 2:40 pm ET), but the build-up to the match has been dominated by reports that a person was arrested for cutting a hole in the fence and spying on the final prematch training session for Lampard's side.

Derby say they are "in discussion" with officials from Leeds about what happened.

A spokesman for the English Football League said: "We are aware of the reports in relation to an incident at the training ground of Derby County".

Per the Telegraph, police were called and the man had binoculars, a change of clothes and pliers in his possession.

Derby are now eight points behind Leeds ahead of Friday night's match, and lost the corresponding fixture at the start of the season 4-1 at Pride Park.
