China broadcasts spacecraft pictures from moon's far side

China's lunar rover Yutu-2 or Jade Rabbit 2 rolling onto the far side of the moon taken by the Chang'e-4 lunar probe is seen in this image provided by China National Space Administrati

China hailed its mission to explore the dark side of the moon as a "complete success" so far on Friday, as it released video of its Chang'e-4 probe making landfall.

China's National Space Administration (CNSA) has made public a batch of selected photos, inducing a 360-degree panorama taken by a camera installed atop the lander. The photos reveal a seemingly endless horizon of grey, rocky terrain.

A rover dubbed Yutu-2 - or Jade Rabbit, the name of the moon goddess´s pet - successfully separated from the lander and drove onto the moon´s surface about eight hours after landing.

CNSA is using a relay satellite to send data back to Earth as the lander and rover survey the landscape and study the geology of the area.

"From the panorama, we can see the probe is surrounded by lots of small craters, which was really thrilling", Li said.

As a result of the tidal locking effect, the moon's revolution cycle is the same as its rotation cycle.

Thai police: Canada, Australia willing to accept Saudi woman
Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne said on Thursday Australia was assessing whether to grant Qunun asylum. Though her asylum case has moved at lightning speed the mystery over which country will accept Rahaf remains.

The deepest region on the moon, with a depth of 9,100 meters (5.7 miles), is about 700 kilometers (435 miles) to the south of the probe, Li said.

The space administration also released a 12-minute video of Chang'e 4's landing utilizing more than 4,700 images taken by an on-board camera.

"The information from the depths of the moon will be one of our focuses in the exploration", said Li. The probe is shown adjusting its altitude, speed and pitch as it seeks to avoid obstacles on the ground.

Because the far side faces away from Earth, it is also shielded from radio transmissions - making it the flawless place from where to study the universe.

Chinese media revealed that the Yutu took a "nap" after solar radiation raised the temperature on the lunar surface to more than 100 degrees Celsius (212 Fahrenheit) before it rebooted itself on Thursday when the dark side's surface cooled after sunset. "And this marks one of the milestone events of building a strong space nation", chief designer for the lunar mission, Wu Weiren, told CCTV.

Scientists have found evidence indicating a heavy asteroid bombardment event in the solar system around 3.9 billion years ago. The exploration might offer clues as to why the bombardment occurred, said Zou.
