Toyota expands nationwide recall over Takata airbag inflators

Toyota Wants 1.7 Million Vehicles Back Because Airbags Are ‘Potentially Deadly’

Toyota is recalling more than 1.3 million vehicles in the US because of a potentially deadly Takata air bag inflator in the front passenger seat. Previously, 37 million United States vehicles with 50 million inflators were recalled and 16.7 million inflators remain to be replaced.

There are fears that when this happens shrapnel could be hurled across the vehicle causing significant harm or damage to passengers.

U.S. authorities in 2014 exposed the Takata airbag defect, which has since resulted in a series of massive recalls concerning at least 100 million units worldwide from multiple manufacturers.

The recall covers Toyota models including the 2010 through 2016 4Runner, the 2010 through 2013 Corolla and Matrix, and the 2011 through 2014 Sienna.

Scion XB compacts from the 2010 to 2015 model years are also involved.

Depending on the model, dealers will either replace the front passenger airbag inflator or airbag assembly for free.

The most unsafe inflators are in areas of the South along the Gulf of Mexico that have high humidity.

This is Toyota's third large-scale Takata-related recall in five months. In total, 19 automakers are recalling more than 100 million potentially faulty inflators worldwide.

To date, 21 deaths have been reported in Honda Motor Co vehicles and two in Ford vehicles.

It is more than three years after the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration took over management of recalls involving Takata inflators.

They cover 37 million vehicles and about 50 million inflators in the US.

The recalls forced Takata of Japan to seek bankruptcy protection.
