NAACP Seeks Week-Long Facebook Boycott Over Racial Targeting

#LogOutFacebook Protest Launched by NAACP

The organization took to its website and Twitter page to call for a one-day boycott of not just Facebook, but also Instagram and the WhatsApp messaging platform, after report from a Senate committee on Monday said that Russia's Internet Research Agency (IRA) used the social media outlets to manipulate and influence black voters in the 2016 USA presidential election.

In a statement, NAACP President Derrick Johnson proclaimed, "Facebook's engagement with partisan firms, its targeting of political opponents, the spread of misinformation and the utilization of Facebook for propaganda promoting disingenuous portrayals of the African American community is reprehensible".

Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms were used to specifically target black Americans as part of the massive online campaign out of Russian Federation to influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.

The report did not explain why Russian Federation went so hard on suppressing African-American voters. The NAACP also called on Congress to conduct further investigations in to the matter.

"Our decision to return the donation to Facebook and logging out of the platform for a week is to bring attention to Facebook 's failures in protecting the integrity of both our privacy and our vote", the NAACP's Johnson said.

The NAACP also revealed they returned a donation received from Facebook. "However, Facebook has to do better".

Goldman Sachs faces charges in corruption probe | Money Talks
Meanwhile, Goldman has pledged to fight the charges, insisting it was misled by the former Malaysian government and 1MDB. Ng, however, was not released, as he is still under remand for his extradition case.

"We know that we need to do more: to listen, look deeper and take action to respect fundamental rights", Sandberg said.

The two reports released Monday - one from New Knowledge and the other from Graphika and University of Oxford researchers - provided further insight into the Internet Research Agency, a troll farm out of Russian Federation previously charged in connection with its efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election.

"We will continue that work and provide periodic updates until the audit is complete", Facebook said.

Along with voter suppression, the Kremlin-supported Internet Research Agency specifically discouraged black people from voting for Hillary Clinton.

"And since the onset of the Silicon Valley boom, the organization has been openly critical about the lack of employee diversity among the top technology firms in the country".

"Facebook was not only looking the other way in response to our concerns, but has in fact been actively working to undermine efforts by those who seek to hold the company responsible for abuses on the platform", said Khera, of Muslim Advocates.
