Philippines to deport American Catholic priest wanted for sex crimes

Bureau of Immigration spokeswoman Dana Sandoval said Thursday that the Rev. Kenneth Bernard Hendricks, who has been indicted in OH for alleged illicit sexual conduct in the Philippines, was arrested in a church in Naval on the island province of Biliran. He says one victim reported more than 40 sexual encounters with the priest.

"He was brought here yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon", BI spokesperson Dana Krizia Sandoval said in a text message to reporters Thursday. US authorities provided information about the alleged sexual assaults to the Philippine government, she said.

The victims were reportedly warned they would be locked up in jail if they told anyone about the abuses, she said.

"Several of his victims have come forward with their statements", Sandoval said.

The US embassy may revoke Mr Hendrick's passport to help Philippine authorities immediately deport him, the Immigration Bureau said in a statement.

"This is our priority, to kick out people like this because they are preying on our children", she told AFP.

The priest would often pass through Los Angeles before visiting OH for months at a time, he said.

Sr. Supt. Julius Coyme, Biliran police chief, said Hendricks was arrested at the Cathedral of Our Lady Rosary Parish about 11 a.m.in the presence of Bureau of Immigration representatives.

Glassman said federal investigators are trying to ascertain the relationship between Hendricks and the archdiocese.

When asked whether Hendricks might have been assigned to work in the Philippines because of concerns about potential abuse, Glassman replied, "The investigation is ongoing, so certainly, whatever are the circumstances that caused Father Hendricks to be doing missionary work in the Philippines, as opposed to stateside, is something that we want to get to the bottom of". "It is a solemn obligation to protect children from sexual abuse". "We can catch the offenders, and we will catch the offenders".
