Nationals Owner Mark Lerner Does Not Expect Bryce Harper To Re-Sign

Inside Patrick Corbin's courting and the world of the newest...

With Corbin now on the books and other moves potentially coming down the pipe with the winter meetings approaching next week, Lerner said the Nationals likely wouldn't be in a position to accommodate Harper on their original offer even if he suddenly chose to take it - not that he expects that to happen.

Nationals managing principal owner Mark Lerner joined a local radio station Friday after his team announced the signing of prized free-agent lefty Patrick Corbin. "I think they've chose to move on". While there are still plenty of teams that are interested in Harper, the daily rumors have begun, so there is a possibility that he may be nearing a decision.

Lerner didn't discuss the exact offer that was given to Harper, but he said the Nationals couldn't comfortably offer more and field a competitive team around the six-time All-Star. There's just too much money out there that he'd be leaving on the table.

As it stands, the Nationals will enter 2019 with an outfield of Adam Eaton, Juan Soto, Michael A. Taylor and Victor Robles.

Kay Felder Arrested in Toronto for Assaulting Woman, Released from Raptors 905
TMZ notes that Felder and the woman got into an argument the night before, resulting in him choking her and leaving visible marks. The Cavs traded Felder to the Atlanta Hawks in a cap-clearing move in October 2017, and he was subsequently waived.

"When we met with them and we gave them the offer, we told them, 'This is the best we can do.' We went right to the finish line very quickly", Lerner told The Fan.

"We feel very strongly we're in good shape", Lerner said. Washington, which could lose star outfielder Bryce Harper this offseason in free agency, won 82 games last season and finished second in the NL East.

"If he comes back, it's a strong possibility that we won't be able to make it work", said Lerner. I think Adam, now I think he's back. "That's just not (agent Scott) Boras' M.O.to leave money on the table". "And I think Adam with the two young guys, it's going to be a special outfield". Whether that's based upon specific knowledge or just his sense of things isn't clear; regardless, it's a notable statement from someone as well-placed as anyone to know how the market is developing for a top-shelf free agent represented by Boras (who has negotiated many a deal with the Lerners). "We are thrilled to bring him into our organization".
