White House Chief of Staff John Kelly expected to step down soon, sources say

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly watches as President Donald Trump speaks during a signing ceremony for the "Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency Act", in the Oval Office of the White House, Friday, Nov. 16, 2018, in Washington.

"Most of the dozens of other interviews have been with people who were associated with the Trump campaign, were part of the transition or served in the early part of the administration", the report said.

The president, at the time, said that he didn't know whether Kelly would leave, but said "I like John a lot". The official spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive matter.

In a deep dive into the career of Nick Ayers, who now serves as a top aide to Vice President Mike Pence, Politico asked author Tony Schwartz what he thought about the 36-year-old Ayers who has the strong support of Pence, as well as Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump.

Reports of Kelly's impending departure have been circulating for months.

"Sure, Trump says he wants him gone, and Kelly swears and leaves and says he's not coming back".

Donald Trump's Chief of Staff John Kelly 'to quit after falling out with him'

When Kelly first replaced Reince Priebus as chief of staff last summer, he ruled with an iron fist.

Kelly has seen his status as chief of staff diminished in recent months, with the President circumventing numerous policies and protocols the retired Marine Corps general put in place when he entered the West Wing previous year.

Kelly has had a tougher relationship with Trump than his predecessor did and instituted more restrictions around who could reach the president. He has complained repeatedly that Kelly is not politically savvy. In 2017, Politico report cited three US government officials who said Kelly's cellphone was compromised throughout the first half of that year, with the suspected breach potentially happening even before he began serving as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security in January.

"He's been with me nearly two years now as you know between the two positions", he continued.
