President Donald Trump plans to attend the Washington funeral of former President George H.W. Bush and is designating next Wednesday a national day of mourning in honor of the 41st president, the White House said Saturday.

When the monarch visited George Bush Snr's son George W Bush in 2007 Washington during his presidential term, she was reunited with the former American leader at a return dinner she hosted at the ambassador's residence. The president and first lady Melania Trump added that Bush had "inspired generations of his fellow Americans to public service". "May his legacy inspire all of us to work toward a kinder and gentler nation, and may our thoughts and prayers bring comfort to his family".

George Bush Snr had lunch with the Queen at Buckingham Palace in 1989, and they appeared relaxed in each other's company.

In a 2006 interview with CNN's Larry King on "Larry King Live", Bush, who flew combat missions in World War II, read part of a letter he wrote his five children before the start of the Gulf War in which he discussed the phrase.

In August 2015, Trump tweeted a dig at the presidency of George H.W. Bush, writing: "The last thing we need is another Bush in the White House". "The exchange will observe a minute of silence to honor President Bush on Monday".

Former President George H.W. Bush will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda next week.

"And through all that he accomplished, he remained humble, following the quiet call to service that gave him a clear sense of direction".

World leaders past and present have been paying tribute to him and Theresa May said Bush's "ethos of public service was the guiding thread of his life and an example to us all".

"Not merely for the years he spent as our 41st President, but for the more than 70 years he spent in devoted service to the country he loved - from a decorated Naval aviator who almost gave his life in World War II, to Commander-in-Chief of our Armed Forces".
