Serena, Nadal and Murray all confirmed for Australian Open

Serena Williams has been confirmed to take part in the 2019 Australian Open as stated on the event's official Twitter account.

Since returning to the sport after childbirth in September of 2017, the 37-year-old has come close to winning another major event but couldn't get over the line; a victory would put her level on 24 with Margaret Court, who holds the record for the most Grand Slam singles titles.

Williams backed out of the 2018 Australian Open, however, due to insufficient preparation time after her pregnancy.

Williams is scheduled to play an exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi in the final week of the year before heading to Australia to warm-up for her assault on the Melbourne Park title at the Hopman Cup in Perth.

A 23-time Grand Slam victor, Williams is no stranger to the Australian Open.

Her older sister Venus is also a multiple Grand Slam victor and the Williams sisters are also known for their business nous, having collaborated to buy a stake in National Football League franchise the Miami Dolphins in 2009. Before the Open, Serena's year had been headlined by her return to full-time tennis, with the veteran appearing at the French Open and Wimbledon.

Nearly all of the world's top 100 men and women's players are also due at Melbourne Park, including Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray.

Both Federer and Djokovic have won the Australian Open six times and should either man win it again, a seventh title would be an outright record, with native Aussie Roy Emerson having also won it six times throughout the 1960s.

The 37-year-old tennis star, who is now ranked No. 16 among women, was named one of the top 102 in her sport and has since committed to competing in January's Melbourne event, the first of four annual Grand Slam tourneys.
