Grace Millane: Police start murder inquiry

Grace Millane, 22, was last seen on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018.

She had booked to stay at the Base Backpackers hostel in central Auckland until 8 December.

New Zealand Police have announced they believe missing British backpacker Grace Millane has been murdered. "We don't have any evidence of foul play but we're keeping an open mind", Mr Beard said.

In a tearful press conference on Friday, Miss Millane's father, who has travelled to Auckland to help with investigations, said his family are "extremely concerned" for her welfare.

"We are treating Grace's disappearance as a homicide investigation".

"We still do no know where Grace is".

Police told media yesterday they hold "grave concerns for her safety".

He added: "Today were have identified and secured a vehicle of interest, and we are now making enquiries to find out exactly where that vehicle has been". He would not confirm what type of vehicle it was.

"We don't know what's happened to the property of hers that has been missing", he said.

The 22-year-old, from Essex, vanished in New Zealand a week ago.

The last confirmed sighting of Grace is still 9.41pm Saturday night going into the CityLife Hotel, Beard said.

She was wearing a black dress and white shoes.

Police continue to offer support to the Millane family, both in New Zealand and in the UK. Investigators described it as a "location of interest".

"Many of these calls have been from members of the public, offering accommodation and assistance to the Millane family".

"He was brought back to the Auckland Central Police Station and is now speaking to us in relation to the murder of Grace Millane".

Auckland Police Detective Inspector Scott Beard said a 26-year-old man is being questioned in relation to Grace Millane's whereabouts.

"Grace started this travel journey in Peru in South America and was really looking forward to the second leg in New Zealand".

The graduate's birthday was on Sunday but she did not contact her family.
