Southwest Airlines flight rolls off runway at California airport
Flights from other airlines were continuing to depart from Burbank.
A Southwest Airlines jetliner rolled off the end of a runway Thursday while landing at Hollywood Burbank Airport in heavy rain, officials said.
Passenger Moe Storch tweeted the Southwest plane from Oakland to Burbank appeared to hydroplane after it landed on the wet runway.
Although the cause of the overrun has yet to be determined, the airport was reporting inclement weather conditions at the time of the event. The plane was carrying 112 passengers and five crew members, a Southwest Airlines spokesperson said. "We are working to get additional details", the statement read. 737-700 rolled into the area known as the Engineered Material Arresting System, though Southwest wasn't able to confirm that.

Flight 278 was inbound from Oakland International Airport (OAK). Yakel says they could not lengthen those runways because they're bookend by the bay and Highway 101.
The Boeing 737 came to a sudden stop after hitting a barrier created to catch aircraft that leave the runway. "They go over these E-MAS beds and the landing gear slowly sinks into these blocks of crushable concrete", Yakel said.
The FAA added the airport remains open and that flights to and from Burbank are fully operational.
