North Korea, United States: Leaders to Meet Early Next Year, Trump Says

North Korea subject of talks between Sth Korean President and PM Jacinda Ardern in Auckland

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday he is likely to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in January or February and that three sites for their second meeting are under consideration.

Kim sharply raised tensions with nuclear and missile tests last year, but suddenly reached out to South Korea and the United States this year with a vague nuclear disarmament pledge. Despite the warming ties, it remains unclear whether Kim will make his first-ever visit to the South this year, as Seoul is hoping.

North Korea is seeking security guarantees from the U.S. and relief from worldwide sanctions.

"President Trump asked me to forward to [Kim] these messages; he has a very friendly view of Chairman Kim Jong Un and likes him".

Moon spoke shortly after a meeting with New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern where they discussed how to secure a denuclearised Korean peninsula. Also, working on his North Korea diplomacy, the president met with the leaders of the Netherlands and South Afirca.

"We're getting along very well", Trump said aboard Air Force One on Thursday as he prepared to travel to the G20 summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

"I think it will be absolutely imperative in this next summit that we come away with a plan for identifying all of the weapons in question, identifying all the development sites, allowing for inspections of the sites and the plan for dismantling nuclear weapons", Pence said in an interview with NBC.

After their third meeting in North Korea's capital, Pyongyang, in September, Moon said Kim agreed to make a reciprocal visit to Seoul in 2018. "We can improve South and North Korean relations as well as attain permanent peace on the Korean peninsula and denuclearisation". In a speech to the leaders on the last day of the G20, President Moon shared his administration's ambitious goal of cutting the country's reliance on coal and nuclear power and increasing the proportion of electricity it gets from renewable sources, ... something he's promised to raise to 20 percent by the year 2030. Their two previous summits were held at the countries' shared border village of Panmunjom. In June, Trump and Kim opened up dialogue on denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula after months of trading military threats and pointed barbs.
