Huawei's chief financial officer arrested in Canada

Huawei CFO Wanzhou Meng arrested in Vancouver, faces extradition to U.S.

"The ban was sought by Ms Meng". Meng adopted her mother's surname.

She will face a bail hearing on Friday, the spokesman for Canada's Department of Justice said.

Reuters reported in 2013 that Ms. Meng served on the board of a Hong Kong-based Skycom Tech Co.

Canada has arrested a senior staff member on Huawei's global executive team on suspicion she violated U.S. sanctions against Iran.

The arrest is related to violations of USA sanctions, a person familiar with the matter said.

"The company believes the Canadian and U.S. legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion".

"The Chinese side has lodged stern representations with the USA and Canadian side, and urged them to immediately correct the wrongdoing and restore the personal freedom of Ms Meng Wanzhou".

"Huawei complies with all applicable laws and regulations where it operates, including applicable export control and sanction laws and regulations of the United Nations, U.S. and European Union".

In June, Canada's Globe and Mail newspaper reported that United States lawmakers warned the Canadian government that Huawei posed a major cybersecurity risk.

Huawei has repeatedly insisted Beijing has no influence over it.

Representatives of Huawei, one of the world's largest makers of telecommunications network equipment, could not immediately be reached for comment by Reuters.

The decision was because of the technology, not because it was a Chinese company, said Andrew Little, Minister Responsible for the GCSB.

Huawei has repeatedly denied engaging in intelligence work for any government and is seeking an urgent meeting with the New Zealand government.

The news comes the same day Britain's BT Group said it was removing Huawei's equipment from the core of its existing 3G and 4G mobile operations and would not use the Chinese company in central parts of the next network.
