Labour MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle tells House of Commons he is HIV positive

I hope that more people will understand that effective treatment keeps people who are HIV positive healthy, and it protects their partners.

Labour's Lloyd Russell-Moyle became the first MP to disclose he is living with the virus in the chamber as he led an adjournment debate on HIV and World Aids Day.

He told the Press Association that there were "low level elements of stigma [surrounding HIV] in every day life". Free condoms were given out, while oral and confirmatory blood-based HIV tests were administered to over 300 attendees by medical practitioners at the event.

He said 95 percent of the number are now on treatment through donor agencies and the USA government; adding that the Nigerian government was treating additional 60,000 people in Abia and Taraba states.

Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Anupriya Patel on Saturday, said, "The HIV/AIDS Programme has focused on more than one million people from high risk group and has kept HIV infection in control through comprehensive and intense targeted interventions services".

Rwanda has launched a six-month awareness and prevention campaign aimed at stemming new HIV infections in the country at a ceremony to mark the World AIDS Day.

The 32-year-old, who is the Member for Brighton Kemptown, wanted his statement to help tackle the stigma around HIV and Aids and inform people that advances in treatment meant he lives a totally unaffected life with the virus.

"The results from our polling are extremely saddening".

According to her, 70 million people had been infected of HIV, and 35 million have died of the infection since discovery in 1983.

The UNSW research also shows the persistence of stigma toward people most likely to be exposed to HIV. So that does a lot to normalise HIV in the public's mind.

"There is some legal discrimination that still exists, for example if you are a pilot you can't get a full pilot's licence to fly a plane in this country".

In Mozambique, Index Case Tracking has seen 38,612 sexual partners tested for HIV of whom 13,154 tested HIV positive in the year 2017. "Talking about that is really important".
