A boy's quest to throw snowballs legally in his town ended in victory on Monday, when trustees of Severance, Colo., agreed with a request from Dane Best, 9, to overturn a long-held ban on snowball fights.
Dane Best, a third grader at Range View Elementary School in Severance, Colorado, had 20 of his classmates write letters of support, and gave a presentation to the town board on why it should be legal to throw snowballs.
Speaking in front of a crowd of residents and media, Best told town trustees that because of the almost 100-year-old ban, which classified snowballs as a type of missile, he couldn't throw a snowball without worrying about breaking the law, or getting into trouble.
Dane Best, 9, appeared before the Severance, Colorado town hall to change an outdated law about throwing snowballs.
Town officials said the ban was part of a much larger ordinance that prohibited people from throwing objects classified as missiles, which included snowballs and stones, the news agency reports.
According to Mayor McLeod, the "snowball ordinance" had never been enforced and no one had ever been cited for it.

I'm sure I'm not the only who is a little disappointed that the Best brothers didn't immediately take those snowballs and whip them directly into the collective mushes of the Severance Town Board.
'So, what ends up happening is (town leaders) always encourage the kids with, "You have the power you can change the law". "He was pretty excited".
The pair went on to became the first legal snowball-throwers in Severance's history.
While Dane could very well have a future as a politician or attorney, he's told his parent's he wants to play in the NFL.

"I asked my mom if I could (ask council to change the law), and she called town hall". You better do that.
So with the help of his classmates, Best made a decision to take it upon himself to change the law. "He definitely has courage and did this on his own, so no matter what path he takes this is definitely a learning experience and we're very proud".
