1st Test: Poor batting leaves India struggling on opening day

Kohli falls as Australia strikes put India on ropes

Australian bowler Nathan Lyon (right) reacts after dismissing Indian batsman Rohit Sharma for 37 runs.

Cheteshwar Pujara defied Australia's bowling attack and overcame stifling conditions at the Adelaide Oval with a century on the opening day of the first Test on Thursday. "I can't rate if it was one of the best but the teammates were appreciating, they were saying it was one of the best", he said at the end of day's play here with India at 250/9 thanks largely to his effort.

Batting after Kohli won the toss, the visitors crumbled in a disastrous morning session under a pace barrage before digging in later in the day with Pujara and Ravi Ashwin (25 off 76 balls) staging a fightback as the bowlers exhausted.

The morning got off to a bad start for Seven - the free-to-air channel somehow failed to fully capture the all-important coin toss, much to the annoyance of those watching.

India captain Virat Kohli opted to bat first but their top order crumbled against Australia's attack, with numerous batsman guilty of poor shot selection.

Bomb kills three in Iranian port city Chabahar: state media
General view of damages after a suicide vehicle bomber outside a police station in Chabahar, Iran on Thursday. Arab separatists and the Islamic State group both claimed responsibility for the attack.

But they spectacularly rose to the challenge.

KL Rahul edged Josh Hazlewood to Aaron Finch at slip for two as his struggle for runs continued, with fellow opener Murali Vijay (11) following shortly caught by Australia skipper Tim Paine off the bowling of Mitchell Starc to leave the tourists 15-2.

In marched superstar Kohli to a huge roar from the crowd, but a stunning catch by Usman Khawaja at gully off a Pat Cummins delivery saw him back in the pavilion for only three off 16 balls, with India in trouble.

Vice captain Ajinkya Rahane and Pujara worked to steady the ship.

It was left to Pujara, in his 65th Test, to dig in and stay at the crease as he ground his way towards a 50 to keep India's hopes alive.
