Former UNM football coach lands job at Maryland

U.Md. looks to Alabama’s Mike Locksley as next head football coach

Before returning for his second stint at Maryland, Locksley was sacked from his head coaching job at the University of New Mexico, where he amassed a putrid total record of 2-26 and found himself dogged by controversy - including allegations of creating a toxic environment of his own.

He has spent the last three years working under Nick Saban at the University of Alabama, where he worked as the co-offensive coordinator and won a national championship last season before he was promoted to offensive coordinator in February 2018 and helped Alabama return to the College Football Playoff.

For Locksley, 48, it's a return to Maryland. Our goal is to create an atmosphere and environment focused on the total development of our student-athletes. Maryland offensive coordinator and interim coach Matt Canada and MI passing game coordinator Pep Hamilton were reportedly other finalists for the job.

He oversaw the running backs there from 1997 to 2002.

Michael Locksley, seen here in 2015 during a previous stint with the Maryland Terrapins, has been hired as head coach of the university's football team.

"On the field, Michael orchestrated one of the country's most prolific offenses at the University of Alabama and has always been regarded for his recruiting prowess", Evans said. Following stints as the defensive coordinator at Florida and Michigan, Durkin went 10-15 in his first two seasons leading the Terps.

Durkin was sacked in the wake of an investigation into the death of offensive lineman Jordan McNair. McNair collapsed during a conditioning workout and died weeks later. Maryland fired Durkin on October 31.

After a lengthy investigation into the program, Maryland's board of trustees chose to bring Durkin back as head coach. First laid with medical personnel, which "misdiagnosed" McNair's ailments - according to university President Wallace Loh - the blame soon also fell on Durkin for allegedly fostering a toxic culture of intimidation and verbal abuse. He then was the Terps' offensive coordinator for four years (2012-15), and was named the team's interim head coach for the last six games of 2015 after Randy Edsall was sacked. Canada interviewed for the full-time job, but the school ultimately went with Locksley.

Despite that tragedy, Locksley said he looks forward to "rejoining the Maryland family", for perhaps one of the biggest challenges of his career. "Thank you to Damon Evans, President Loh and the entire Terrapin community for this opportunity", Locksley said.
