The Impact of Low-Carbohydrate Diets on Metabolism

The best way to maintain weight loss may be to change your diet to one low in carbohydrates according to new research

The study, carried out in the USA by Boston Children's Hospital, and three major universities, tracked the weight of 164 adults, all of whom had lost around 1.5 stone already on a controlled 10-week diet.

Those who achieved the target weight loss were then randomly assigned diets varying from 60 percent (high) to 20 percent (low) carbohydrate.

Researchers conducted a study called the "Framingham State Food Study", on which, diet of the participants was strictly controlled by providing them with fully prepared food-service meals for 20 weeks. These people were then placed on either high, moderate or low-carb diets for an additional 20 weeks. That being stated, we as a whole should eat starches inside a breaking point, as there are various medical advantages of following an diet low in sugars.

Participants on the low-carb diet burned as many as 278 calories a day more than those on the high-carb regimen.

The new study published by the journal BMJ revealed that, over the course of 20 weeks, the participants were burning an average of 250 extra calories per day.

The researchers, who are presenting their findings to the ObesityWeek 2018 conference in Tennessee, USA, concluded: "Dietary composition seems to affect energy expenditure independently of body weight".

Instead, he said, the source of those calories may make the difference in whether your metabolism "works with you or against you".

Bale `ready´ to face Denmark, says Wales boss Giggs
Giggs has described the game as a "cup final" with the extra carrot of a potential route into the European Championship. The Manchester United legend said: " The UEFA Nations League was quite hard to get your head around it ".

"These findings show that all calories are not alike to the body from a metabolic perspective and that restricting carbohydrates may be a better strategy than restricting calories for long-term success", Ludwig said.

Keto, Atkins, Whole30-low-carb diets all but dominated the weight-loss world over the last few years.

Sattar, who was not involved with the study, said that the low-carbohydrate group seems to have been eating more calories than the other groups to have kept similar weights.

Many studies over the years have attempted to answer the question of whether low-fat or low-carb is better for weight loss.

Experts also pointed out that all the participants had the same basic metabolic rate, so other unmeasured activities could explain differences, as well as high levels of saturated fat in the low-carbohydrate diet, which could lead to increased cholesterol and heart disease risk.

Kevin McConway an emeritus professor of applied statistics at the Open University wrote that the different diets consists foods that may differ in carbohydrate and fat content so it is another fact that can influence the results as well as the energy level.
