Amber Rudd back in cabinet as new work and pensions secretary

Stephen Barclay named new Brexit Secretary, Amber Rudd returns

Barclay joins Amber Rudd in the cabinet, the latter replacing Esther McVey as Work and Pensions Secretary.

Ms Rudd, who stood in for the Prime Minister in televised debates during the 2017 election campaign, resigned as Home Secretary in April over the Windrush scandal. The Tory also shockingly claimed that her current handling of Brexit is in "crisis mode" and told the Financial Times that the European Union referendum vote had "divided the country, the party and my own family".

The government also announced replacements for two junior ministers who resigned over Mrs May's deal.

The Press Association has confirmed Rudd's work and pensions appointment, but Number 10 has yet to make an official announcement.

Her return to the ministerial ranks has been welcomed by colleagues, including Sajid Javid and Liz Truss.

The government says it "completely disagrees" with the United Nations report, but in the Daily Mirror's view, it could not have painted a bleaker picture of austerity Britain.

Earlier, the Scottish Secretary David Mundell pledged his support for Theresa May amid what he called an "unprecedented onslaught" by her critics. Let's hope she shows more concern for the victims of this department's unfairness and cruelty than she did at the Home Office.

Asked about the term tonight, Ms Rudd said: "I never saw it like that".

"They're not moving down here to get a job, they're moving down here to have easier access to friends and drugs and drink".

Parliament will be looking to Ms Rudd to see how she will deal with the ongoing crisis of the Government's Universal Credit benefits system, which has been highly controversial and heavily criticised.

Ms McVey resigned from the frontbench over Theresa May's proposed EU Withdrawal Agreement.

In a statement, Downing Street declined to say whether the Brexit Secretary post had been offered to anyone else before the North-East Cambridgeshire MP, following reports Mr Gove and the Attorney General Geoffrey Cox had both turned it down, saying only: "He was the Prime Minister's choice for the job".

Michael Gove, who had meant to leave the post of Minister for the environment, chose to stay in office and said trust, the British Prime Minister.
