Premier League to introduce VAR technology from next season

Premier League clubs voted against VAR's introduction this season at a meeting in April, before it was used successfully at the World Cup in Russian Federation.

The prospect was discussed at a shareholder's meeting and agreed "in principle" to follow the lead set in Serie A, the Bundesliga and La Liga and after its implementation at the World Cup in Russian Federation.

The Bundesliga, La Liga and Serie A are already using VAR, which allows disputed incidents to be reviewed with the use of video replays, and the technology was used at the World Cup in Russian Federation this year.

A statement from the Premier League said its testing programme would continue for the rest of the season, "with a continued emphasis on those Saturday afternoons which have several matches being played concurrently".

A formal request will now be made to both lawmakers the International Football Association Board and Fifa, the world governing body, to use VAR next season.

Premier League clubs voted against the introduction of VAR this season at a meeting back in April.

There were renewed calls to introduce VAR to the Premier League after Southampton were denied a second goal - which they believed should have stood - in their match against Watford last weekend. The officials cost us two points.

"You go on about VAR this and VAR that, help the officials out", said Austin. They [the referees] clearly need help. "It is a joke".
